Legend has it that smoked beer was created entirely by accident in a town in Franconia. A fire at the local brewery ruined a large batch of malt with smoke. However, the resourceful brewer couldn’t afford to waste it and decided to brew beer using the smoke-damaged malt. As a result, the first smoked beer was born—and it quickly gained popularity throughout Franconia. Today, the true home of smoked beer is considered to be the German city of Bamberg.
