In 1718, during his trip to England, Peter the Great first tasted and fell in love with the popular stout of that time. He immediately ordered a shipment of stout to be sent to his Imperial Court. However, to the great disappointment of English brewers, the ordered batch spoiled during the long journey to Russia. Not wanting to lose face, London's Barclay Brewery developed a new recipe, increasing the amount of hops and alcohol content specifically for the Imperial Court. The result was a strong, ink-black stout with a warming body and complex aroma that became a sensation throughout the Russian Empire. Thus was born the Russian Imperial Stout - a new beer style that quickly gained popularity across Europe.
The Russian Imperial Stout is truly the Emperor among stouts, with high alcohol content and a rich malt character.
